5 Greeting Cards I Like that I Made for Our First Friday Art Show

Kind & Funny is about to deliver a few very cool projects in the next few weeks, and in the meantime we’re working on refreshing our creativity by making a little bit of art.

Thanks to our amazing real estate agent client Liz from the Denver Nook, that art actually is on walls in her office, and you can see it and even buy it at Tennyson Street’s First Friday party.

You can see some of the art at www.kindandfunny.com/art in addition to some of the pieces that we sold at April’s event (other things will be seen for the first time on Friday). I still can’t believe that I sold art that I made at all, but I like the feeling so I made a few adjustments to the weird one-of-a-kind greeting cards I made to see if they’d be more appealing with writing inside.

Here are 5 of the cards with a little bit about what I like about them:

1. Birthday perfume

Was it just me, or did you also love perfume / cologne samples in magazines as a kid? That’s why I cut this out and glued it to a card. The inspiration for the dumb joke: One birthday my brother got me a card. The front said, “Forget about the past, it already happened.” The inside said, “Forget about the present, I didn’t get you one.” It was accurate, and I still think that’s a great joke, so I channeled it into this card.

2. Date card

I don’t know how the kids are doing dating these days, and based on Zendaya’s movie Challengers I maybe should have made a couple of these, but my wishful thinking is that this card helps someone break the ice with a special someone, and even if that icebreaking doesn’t result in everlasting love, at least they’ll have seen Dune: Part 2, which is so freaking worth it.

3. Share some news

The first time around on these greeting cards I left them blank inside because I like to buy blank cards and write whatever I want, but I was definitely swayed by people who told me they like their card-writing done for them. This card is very close to blank, just drawing simply on the scene in this amazing illustration to give the sender a hint on what to write.

4. Conceptual love note

When this was a blank card, I just liked gluing the image so it was white on one side and black on the other. When I went to write in it, I had a thought that it could be readable from whichever side you opened first. Then, you’d see the upside-down text and you could flip it over and unfold it to see that it’s a love note for the other person’s whole self, no judgment, which I thought was a nice sentiment.

5. Complimenting aging

One of the reasons I prefer blank cards is that a lot of pre-written cards kind of suck, specifically birthday cards. I feel like way too many of them just talk about how bad it is to age, a thing that we all do, and make fun of the person for being another year older. I Googled this and immediately found conversations about ageism in greeting cards, so I’m definitely not alone.

Anyways, I wanted to hint that I was going that route, and then actually say something nice:

You’ll find these and other cards, plus a lot of cool stuff that Kelly made, at the Denver Nook on Tennyson starting at 5 pm on Friday, July 5. Hope to see you there!

Shoutout to my all-time favorite card maker, Paul of Mountain vs. Plains. jed@kindandfunny.com.
